Detroit Couple Pleads Guilty to Toddler Grilling

A Detroit couple pleaded guilty for trying to cremate the dead body of their toddler on a barbecue grill in order to conceal the child's death. The couple continued to collect the child's welfare benefits.
According to the Associated Press, on November 22 Detroit Police received an anonymous lead, which prompted officers to investigate the couple's home. The unnamed tipster reported the abuse of a one-year old child, who was allegedly forced to take a bath in scalding hot water. During the search authorities discovered the charred remains of 2-year-old Deuntay Miller in a plastic bag hidden in the basement ceiling.
Wayne County Medical Examiner, Carl Schmidt, said the remains displayed indications of disease, abuse, malnutrition and several broken bones. The actual cause of the boy's death could not be determined. "It is very difficult to think of an innocent child suffering so profoundly during his two years on earth," said Schmidt.
The deceased boy's father, Joseph Miller, 28, accepted a plea bargain, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and could face up to 50 years at his sentencing on April 16. Had Miller not struck a deal with prosecutors he would have been charged with first-degree murder and mutilation of a dead body - charges that could have gotten him a sentence of life without parole.
Nickella Reid, 23, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and welfare fraud because she failed to report the death of her son to the Welfare Agency and continued to collect state assistance. Reid will be sentenced on April 7 and faces up to 15 years in prison.
